okay im having a pool party for my bday next week...and i think i may be getting my period around that date. ughh. lately, ive been getting it every two weeks. (its happened 3 times already) its so annoying, and im terrified of using a tampon, but im considering it because i will not just sit out of the pool at my own party. i have a few questions because im super scared about using one..
1. how far does it go in?
2. does it hurt when putting it in?
3. is it uncomfortable the first time wearing it?
4. is it okay to use one? ive had my period for almost a year.
also, is there any type of medication or something to help delay a period that i could ask my doctor about? just anything...i really dont want to be having my period during my own pool party..:(

Like you said, you don't want to sit out at your own party. & there is NO other way to swim on your period, because you risk being embarrased by blood dripping & such, it's just not an option. Tampons are actually A LOT better than pads. You will probably like them & want to wear them all the time. I will try to answer some of your questions so you understand.
1. The applicator goes in all the way until the ridges [finger grips] are just outside the opening. Then, you push the skinny part [where the string is hanging] all the way in & the tampon just goes in. Don't worry, it won't go too far & get lost or something. The string is really long anyways, & doesn't break by just pulling.
2. It should never hurt when putting it in. If it does, stop, & wiggle it around until you find the right spot. You'll know where the right spot is because it'll just glide wright in & you won't feel it at all. You might feel a little tingling but that's just because you're not used to it. So if it hurts, you've just got it in the wrong spot, so don't force it if it does.
3. No, it shouldn't be uncomfortable. You will probably be nervous about it so you might be like, really aware that it's there since it's your first time. But otherwise, it just won't be noticeable. If you feel it whenever you move, it may not be in all the way & if it hurts you definitely need to take it out & use another one.
4. Of course it's okay to use one. Some people wait a long time to start because they are afraid, but then start to wear them all the time. They're really not anything to be afraid of.. they're not detrimental to your health & they're usually pretty good at preventing the blood from getting on your clothes. With a pad, you might be shifting around, & you can easily get it on your underwear or clothes, but with tampons, just think of it as plugged up.
The only medication I know of is birth control, which regulates your period. If you seriously want that, you'd have to get it with an adult because I assume you're not 18. There are medications that will make your period come about 4 times a year, but doctors usually prescribe that to girls who have serious trouble with their periods, like very heavy, always bleeding through clothes, etc. But as you get older your period will become more regular, so I would just deal with it for a bit.
Tips
*Make sure you change the tampon every 4-8 hours, closer to 4 if you have a heavy period [like the first couple days usually]
*Don't wear it to bed unless you know you'll be getting up in 8 hours or less.
*Read the box because they usually have diagrams or small booklets so that you understand better. Or look some diagrams up online.
*Ask a mom, friend, sister, aunt, etc. if you're having trouble. All girls deal with it so it's nothing to be embarrased by.
*Use a mirror if you're having trouble with where to put it in.
*RELAX. It will become 10 times harder if you're nervous & tense!
