Short story:
My bffl. let's call him Joe, and I have been friends since 6th grade--we're both in 9th grade right now. His sister and my sister were on the know each other friend kind of basis? Anyways, let's call his sister Jane. Well, Jane finished her 2nd yr of college and she came home for summer break. Well, Joe and I were joking around in Biology about drinking hand sanitizer [don't ask]--this was last Friday-- and then he said "My sister drank nail polish remover" and I thought it was like a dare, joke thing so I laughed. And then he said "No, it's nothing to laugh about. She's hospitalized. She did it on purpose" And the only thing I could think of was "Oh." So that wasn't at all supportive. I don't know exactly when this happened but it was sometime last week and she was trying to commit suicide. I'm pretty close to Joe and I know he's going through the "I hate life" stage and to add on to that, his sister tried to commit suicide. I haven't been able to talk to him much after that [exams screwed up the schedule]. I see him tomorrow tough and I can probably catch him on AIM tonight. I just don't know what I should say. I want to tell him that I'm always here if he needs to talk to me but then I feel like I shouldn't because I don't want to bring it back up [it's been like 5 days since]. I don't know what to do. But I want to be a good friend and be there for him.

Just say that you're sorry for your reaction when he first told you but it was just a bit shocking. Then say what you wrote... that you're always there if he needs to talk or just wants to hang out.
