Shallowness and materialisticness

Question Posted Tuesday May 29 2007, 11:29 pm

I'm a teenage girl who has way more maturity than any other teenager you'll meet. I suffer from depression, and well everyone in my town is a shallow preppy conceited betch who only cares about their nails/hair/clothes/etc.

The problem is i just choose not to obsess over that inane stuff (to a certain extent- It's not like I disregard my appearance completely) and people think that's really weird.

I'm a thespian and musical theater is all I care about.

Why am I the only person in the world who has REAL values, and would rather spend time doing something REAL, like musical theater, instead of just doing something inane like shopping?

I cry about it all the time.

everyone asks me "what are you so sad about?" and i never know what to say. :(

FIRST i must say, that you are such an amazing person. I feel this way all the time, and sometimes people just make me want to throw up because of how stupid and shallow they are. Try to teach these people what life is all about, and add some meaning to your life, and try talking to people who might not be the prettiest peole in the world, and not like just preppy people. You arent the only one who has real values, because i know alot of people like you, and im only 14. You just have to find people like that, to challange you to be a better person. Not saying that you think you are better than everyone else, because i feel that way all the time, but try not to make yourself feel that you are the only real one, because sometimes even the most preppiest people are just covering up just as much pain as the next person

Take it from me, a fellow thespian who battles with depression that your not alone in your conflict. Americas standards, and values have been declining over the years, and now it's just getting worse. Alot of theatre people battle with depression (ex. Robbin Williams, you, me) and we don't really know why. When people ask you why your sad, don't turn on your acting skills and just say some lines you've ran over and over in your head, tell them exactly how you feel. Who knows maybe they deal with the same thing, and are just afraid to tell anyone. When I get depressed I usually listen to my broadway, or musical CD's, I don't know, somehow it just helps. Some of my favorites are Wicked, Chicago, Rent, Cats, The Light in the Piazza, and The Phantom of the Opera. I hope this helps you out. In our cases, the main thing to focus on is how to cope/function with the depression in our day to day lives. Carpe' Diam, Sieze the Day, Make the most out of life, and If you still need support, I'm always here for yah.:)

-EDIT-
Sorry for offending you, but that's what I believe. Don't call me bitchy. I didn't say you were bitchy. I'm just trying to be honest. That's what real advice is. Besides, if I was "just like them," why would I care about poverty and world hunger?

You aren't the only person in the world with "real values." What you fail to realize is that those people that value materialistic things do so to shield themselves from the real world. They feel that as long as they have money to buy themselves nice things, the rest of the world must be okay too. They live in a surreal world where everything is seemingly perfect, when it's far from it. Musical theater does the same thing for you. You most likely feel that as long as you have it in your life, everything is better.

Not to be rude, but you aren't any different. You putting theater before everything else is just like them putting clothes before everything else. If you think musical theater is a value, then that's your opinion. Other people are entitled to their opinions. Some people really think looking nice is a value. They're allowed to think that.

I understand that musical culture is really important, but, honestly, it's not going to solve any really big problems like poverty or world hunger. Musical theater is a great thing, yes, but it's not the most important thing in the world. You want to make a difference? Get your theater friends together and start a food drive. During your shows, put out cans for donations to the poor. I don't know what kind of town you live in, but maybe you and your friends can go around and get kids interested in music so they'll stay off the streets and out of trouble.

Start helping people while doing the things you love and I guarantee you'll be 100% happier. Your positive influence will affect everyone around you, including those materialistic people. You can make a difference.

It would be great if you could find some other people who share your passion for musical theatre. Are there any theatre groups or camps you could join, where you could meet others who share your interest? If there's nothing like that in your town right now, at least you can look forward to college, where you'll meet tons of people who are involved in the things you care about.

In the meantime, though, it might help to develop some interests other than theatre. You have accused a lot of people of being shallow and conceited because they only care about one thing (shopping)... but perhaps they have the same opinion of you, that you are shallow because you only care about theatre. Expand your horizons and give people a chance. Chances are, at least some of the people who like shopping also care about other, more serious things as well. People are not all as one-dimensional as you might think. Come out of your shell and try to get to know some different types of people. And get yourself a manicure... it really does make you feel good!

Well, shopping to some people is ''REAL'', You have to realise everybody is entitled to live their life how they want to.

I dont agree with people being shallow e.g. getting a bofrend cos hes go a nice car, but not everbody is materialisitic.

Just enjoy what you do, and try to encourage others to join you in doing so, but most teenage girls like shopping, im 17 and I like shopping, I the same as you am more mature for my age.

You can be depressed just because everybody else in the world isnt you, look to the bright side, and be proud of what you can achieve, dont think of other peoples lives.
