Coating the actual tampon with petroleum jelly will ruin its absorbancy (the jelly will block it from soaking up your flow). However, you CAN use it on the applicator to make insertion easier. Unless the petroleum jelly is dirty for some reason, it should't cause an infection or any other problem.

Because it might pass on an infection. You could try using something like tampax compact, they're small and have easy insertion.
