My hair used to be thick too, but I found that when I got it thinned out and layered at the hairdressers this really worked and was great. Now its really manageable and I don't have to straighten it everyday like I used to. Could be an idea?

Plus straightening isn't all that good as it damages your hair, espeically if it's longish. Make sure you're using heat protection.

Or you could use some hair serums to keep the frizz down and that will also make your hair a lot more manageable.

My hair is thick with wave. I agree with the mousse, suggestion. But also get something for frizz- it helps with the poofiness.
I use John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair serum, extra strength formula.
The link following will show you what it looks like. It's kind of pricey, but you don't use very much at a time, and it works really well.
I think it is worth the price, because my hair is very thick, and goes half down my back, and this product actually lasts me quite a while. And it works very well with de-poofing your hair.

There are cremes and things like that will keep your hair straight for a long period of time that way you won't have to straighten it all the time.

My hair's just like yours, and I got tired of straightening it too. Buy a can of mousse (Garnier Fructis has some great stuff for curls), apply some to wet hair, and let it dry naturally. It'll accentuate the curl, and the product in your hair helps reduce poof. =]
