i have an addiction to gum. i buy about five packs a week and if i dont have gum i get really antsy. i know this sounds stupid but is chewing about 3-4 pieces of gum a day bad for you in any way if you dont swallow it?
Chewing gum on an empty stomach will make your body think it's about to receive food. This causes the stomach acids to multiply in readiness to begin the digestive process. If then no food arrives, the acids will start to work on your stomach lining. This, in time, can lead to stomach ulcers causing you all sorts of problems.
It would be better if you started to wean yourself off of the gum, and maybe look at the reasons as to why you have the addiction. Does it help you to deal with stress? If you can sort out the cause for the addiction you may find it easier to kick it. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
cutie_pie answered Wednesday May 23 2007, 12:11 am: there are some hazards to too much gum chewing. one is directed towards sugar free gums that have Phenylalanine which is an amino acid and component of the artificial sweetener known as aspartame, or NutraSweet. some people cannot metabolize that component which can result to many problems, ranging from seizures to headaches.
and lots of studies have proven that aspartame is harmful to the body, so chewing lots of sugar free gum is probably not the best idea. Aspartame can also work as a laxative, which is another con. Another bad thing about chewing too much gum is that it causes gas..ya sounds funny now, but its not so funny when your in pain because you have too much gas.
another thing is chewing too much gum is bad for your jaw according to the ADA, because it makes your mandible muscles over developed which is bad for your teeth and can cause jaw aches as well as head aches.
the good that comes from chewing gum, it has been shown by a few studies that chewing gum can improve your memory. Also chewing gum curbs your apetite which means less eating which means weight loss.

Oh, and don't believe the myth that it takes seven years to digest gum. Not true. It does take a little longer and it barely has any good nutrients.
I think that gum would be a good way to get your antsiness under control, But try to limit your gum consumption as much as you can. Just switch at meals... get long- lasting flavors to help . Good luck! [ Helpful's advice column | Ask Helpful A Question ]

Gum with lots of sugar in it can lead to cavities if you don't brush your teeth regularly. Remember to use stuff like Orbit and sugar free stuff if you're going to be doing alot of chewing.
