Laundry mishap...

Question Posted Sunday May 20 2007, 11:42 pm

I went in a hot tub in my new bathing suit, which is white with a hot pink paisley design on it. I put it in a plastic bag, and forgot about it for a week or so.

I did laundry, remembered my bathing suit and tossed it in, but now the white is kind of yellowy.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix that without ruining the pink pattern?

First try a laundry detergent with bleach for COLORED clothes and DO NOT put the suit in the dryer at all. (never put a swimsuit in a dryer or any stained clothing because it "sets" the stain)

If that does not work, try spraying the entire suit with a spot remover like Spray -n Wash or the like. Let set for 30 minutes and wash with detergent with bleach for COLORED clothes and OXY or a product that has the OXY in it.

You can try to make a paste up with the OXY and put all over the suit letting it soak and stand for 30 minutes then wash. An OXY product is oxidized and air bubbles in the material releases and removes stains, whether super imposed dyes, organic stains, or yelowing.

An old fashioned method is laying whites out on the grass-- the sun and grasses' oxygen bleaches the whites whiter by oxygen flowing through the material.

Adding baking soda to your laundry helps whitened yellowed material.

So you have a few options to try. It'll depend on the suit's fabric to know which will work and how fast.

The yellowing occured from being inside the bag wet and not able to dry, being denied the OXYgen.
