A tank top. Because, I'm guessing that in all of the scary movies, the drunks that beat their wives wear those tank tops. So they came to be known as 'wife beaters.'

Haha. I can't stop laughing at ammo's answer. He sounded so serious when he answered it. I think what you're asking for, is a kind of clothing that looks like a singlet.

The origin of the term wifebeater is from the stereotype that the shirts are worn predominantly by men who beat their wives.

When worn by a woman, the singlet is sometimes described as a boybeater.

Well, if you mean the LITERAL sense, it's someone who beats their wife or girlfriend.

If you mean it in the clothing sense, it's just a ribbed tank top. Like this:
