The risks of tanning beds...?

Question Posted Sunday May 6 2007, 8:47 pm

Prom is coming up, and my friend has been trying to convince me to go tanning with her. So i went today, and it was pretty okay. but when i got home i found a website saying all these risks about tanning and i'm not sure i should go again....

Do tanning beds really cause skin cancer and other skin diseases? are there safe ways to get a tan?

There is no safe, real tan. Any excessive exposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer later in life. The only 'safe' way is to use a spray-on tanner, since that is just a dye that soaks into the outer layer of your skin.

I know it makes you look pretty now, but remember this; exposure to UV rays can lead to premature aging. You won't look so pretty at 35 with wrinkles and cancerous skin lesions!

Well, if you put it all into perspective, you've probably soaked up a whole lot more UV (cancer-causing) rays of sunlight just walking around outside in your life than you'll get from tanning. Still, the whole point of a tanning bed is to concentrate those rays so you get hit by about ten times as many at once. It's really the actual tanning of the skin that causes the increased chance of skin cancer, so nothing but a spray-on tan is totally safe. Still, you'd be surprised at how much higher typical radiation from the sun is than nuclear waste or x-rays or any other one of those things that people get so worried about. So.... wear sunscreen. :)

You should REALLY not go to tanning beds. You can get skin cancer, and when you get to be older, you will have ALOT of wrinkles. I mean all old people have wrinkles but you will have ALOT. It's just horrible for your skin. Also, there was one case where a girl went everyday to a tanning bed, and her insides decayed, but of course thats only in EXTREME cases.

If you want to get safely tan, try mystic tanning. Go to a good one though, because some can make your skin orange-ish.

yes, tanning can cause skin cance, and other skin diseases. Theres really no "safe" way to get a tan from a tanning bed, nor laying outside. Sanless tanning lotions can leave you loooking a little more orange then tan and they only will last that day pretty much (b/c when you take a shower it'll come off) But me personaly i would say a spray on tan would prob. being the savest and the best way to go other then tanning.

But tanning can be bad. but if you only go a few times, then i you'll be fine :)
