ok, well i've never been the athletic type at all, especially when it comes to running. at school we're having a test and i have to be able to run a mile in less than 10:30... no big deal, right? well, for me it is. 10:30 was actually my best time this year as a practice, and i was barely able to do it. i'm supposed to just keep jogging at a steady pace and NOT stop to walk to make it, but the longest i can keep running is about half a mile, and even that's a stretch (the fastest i've fone that is about 4:35). i can't distract myself from the running like most people can. how can i possibly make this easier on myself (besides practice, because i HAVE been doing that and trying my best)? any good ways to distract myself and not think about the running or my legs, appendiz, etc? anything i can do physically to improve my running?

Several years ago I had a dance class in High School (instead of gym) and we had to run a mile every so often- the teacher always told us to start out with a steady jog so we wouldn't burn ourselves out in a two minutes. Start off with a jog, and when you get more energy, start running faster.
It's also really important to stretch well before you run. Take your time before you start, and make sure you are fully energized and have had a good stretch so that your legs won't cramp up.
Another thing you should do is drink plenty of water...bring a water bottle along with you.
Oh, and I agree with the others- if you can, listen to music while running. It'll help take your mind off things. [ ciao77's advice column | Ask ciao77 A Question ]

When you sprint and jog, and even walk, use your whole body as one unit, don't just use your legs. Use your arms to carry your upper body along with your legs.. push off with the balls of your feet.. for some final advice, conserve your breath as best as you can, take deep breaths, and when you walk, lift your arms over your head to get the blood flow really pumping and to get oxygen back inside of you, wish you lots of luck! And don't stress over it! Really listen to some good music and get lost in it, and just do your best, as long as you try, that's really what matters [ ThEDaRkEsTSiDe's advice column | Ask ThEDaRkEsTSiDe A Question ]
ASAPcamille answered Monday April 23 2007, 3:13 pm: make sure you stretch, and maybe if you have an ipod bring it. im pretty athletic, and i usually do a good 7 minutes on the mile, but with my ipod i got 6.25, so it does help. but stretching will help a lot, and make it easier- jog with a friend too!
