Im getting braces in like a month and I pretty much dont know anything about them. like how many different kinds are there and colors and what you do to take of them??-
The first time you get them on, there's a chance it's going to hurt a little. Especially when biting into hard stuff but it's discomfort more than pain.
You'll get them tightened every few weeks (depending on your treatment and orthodontist) and after tightening they feel a little tender and uncomfortable and you might feel some pain again when biting into hard stuff but it's not an unbearable pain and it wears off a few days after having them tightened.
Your orthodontist will probably give you a starter pack, like someone already mentioned. If they don't give you dental wax, ask them for some. The wires on your braces may rub the inside of your mouth and cause cuts and ulcers, the wax is to put over the brackets that are rubbing against the inside of your mouth to stop them from hurting.
They'll tell you all this when you get them done but don't chew gum or eat chewy sweets. I thought I'd be clever and eat chewy stuff anyway and I've had to have 3 brackets replaced. It's normal for a bracket to unstick sometimes but eating gum and chewy stuff will just make more of them come off, therefore keeping your braces on for longer.

It really depends on how you deal with pain. When you first get them on though, it doesn't hurt at all, you just have to keep your mouth open for flippin ever, so it sucks.
There are three different kinds I believe, depending on what your orthodontist carries, because some do carry these and some don't. There's the regular brace, with the metal brackets, which I'm sure you've seen before. Then there's a regular brace with clear brackets. These are more expensive & also you can still see them. So, I wouldn't get them just so you can enjoy the whole braces experience. :] Then some carry invisalign as well. Mine didn't and I was surprised because I go to a very well known orthodontist. Invisalign doesn't have a very good name. I think they're getting sued and stuff. Because of their products not working to their full potential.
This really depends on your doctor too. When you get your braces every month you'll go to your ortho & you'll get your braces tightened. Then you'll change the color of them. I know that mine had about 24 different colors. Every color you could possibly think of, she had.
They'll probably give you a starter kit, with a soft head toothbrush, [you'll be required to use this!] flossers, [which are tiny things that make it easier to floss with braces] and also wax. [Used to put your braces when you start developing ulcers.
You can drink soda of course. But DON'T chew gum. It was horrible when they told me this because I was liiiike the girl who had the gum every single day, I was always chewing it. So, I had to completely stop and I just switched to mints! My guy friend didn't chew gum the entire length of having his braces on and he supposedly got them off 6 months earlier. His ortho said it was because of him not chewing gum. That's what made me stop! :]

they will tell u to not drink soda or chew gum.. but seriously i did that.. and my teeth came out fine lol
but LISTEN to everything they say about the rubberbands, if not it will delay. and you will get your braces off late [ nerissa's advice column | Ask nerissa A Question ]
Dork answered Tuesday April 10 2007, 1:36 am: i don't know a whole lot about them either. i know that they'll hurt a LOT for the first few days but not as much after that. as for colors, i'm pretty sure they can be changed at almost any time. they're just different colored rubber bands.
