what's worse - a mean, manipulative back-stabbing "friend" or a hypocritical, following, will do whatever the "mean" one does to a person "friend"? which one is worse - friend #1 or friend #2? or are they both equally bad in their own ways?

Both are bad... thats for sure. But the "follower" is just as bad as the first one.
In a way they are exactly the same because they are both being manipulative and back stabbing. The only difference is that number 2 is easily changed while number 1 has their minds made up.
