my dog and that new food thing.

Question Posted Sunday April 1 2007, 11:13 am

Okay well my dog is 6 years old and since this whole food thing has happened we are worried he might be sick from it. In recent news they just revealed that it had been found in dry dog food also. Well we had been feeding my dog IAMS, which was recently pulled off the shelf. We got that bag of dog food 3 weeks to a month ago. And he just through up. But he has threw up before and it could also be because we were on vacation for the weekend so we gave him food & water and put him in my bathroom since itd be better than a cage and its bigger. So do you think it could just be axienty because we were gone or could he have that disease from the food. Also what are some of the simptoms of that food disease. Sorry if this was alittle confusing.

There is no magical 'food disease'. The pet food recalls are for melamine content, which is causing kidney failure.

It's definitely not the food. If your dog's kidneys were failing, he shouldn't be vomiting. My dog died of renal kidney failure in November, and he wasn't vomiting.

If he's vomiting, it might be anxiety, or it might just be him being a dog. Sometimes they eat too much, or eat something they shouldn't. Occasional vomiting is to be expected from dogs.

If I read this correctly your dog is eating IAMS dog food that is dry and not wet. If the food is dry you have no need to worry. The recall does not affect ANY Iams dry pet food for either dogs or cats right now. Furthermore, IAMs entire line of dry pet foods are not manufactured by Menu Foods Inc.

Iams wet pet food for dogs and cats are affected but it's a certain type of wet pet food. You need to log onto Iams.com and check the U.S. and Canadian list of recalled foods. This will tell you that your dog is fine for sure.

Animals do get sick and throw up now and again and it's likely not related at all to the recall. However, after reading the Iams site and the answer to this question take the dog to an emergency vet or your regular vet and call ahead to tell them what food it's on.

They may just tell you that he's unaffected over the phone as they know what food has been tainted. The vacation could be a reason why he's not feeling well.

When a dog is sick the best thing you can do instead of serving him/her pet food is to serve it regular rice with ground beef and nothing else in it. Vets recommend this a lot. At the same time look for organic pet foods and diets on the Internet and wean him off of the other food using those instructions.
