I have two Boston Terriers and a greyhound. The Boston Terriers were very easy to train, they don't shed, mine dont bark unless someone knocks at the door. Also, they are not uncontrolably hyper but they have wonderful personalities. I have two, one was trained sit, down, paw, rollover by the time he was four months old and the other one was a year before he could pull all that off.

Hope I helped and good luck!!

your in luck, i know a lot about dog breeds (i am in agriscience at vo-tech and we learn about this stuff)

Airedale terrier-
Great with kids, may play too rough with small children though, its a fairly large terrier, not a small yappy one. Easy to train, and does not shed. They are ususally around 22-24 inches tall and around 50 or 60 pounds.

Cockapoo-
Mix between cocker spainel and poodle, looks more like a poodle especially in its face. Small dog, doesn't shed much but stil requires normal grooming. These dogs are good with children, and other dogs.

Italian Greyhound-
Smallest form of greyhounds so it probably isn't that huge one you are thinking about. Very gentle dogs, Very obiedent and easy to train. Sometimes might do something mischevious like an average dog but it will know when it has done something bad. Great with well behaved children, if the children are rambunctious the dog will be too.
This dog is best in a quiet house hold. Their hair is short and smooth and also does not shed much.

Miniature poodle--
Sheds very little but requires considerable grooming. Very smart, playful, and trainable. Typically good with children but can sometimes be sensitive or nervous around rowdy children. Require a lot of attention, always wants to be part of family activities.

Hope i helped and happy puppy picking.

You might want to check out a breed called "Golden Doodles." It's a beautiful dog that is mixed with a poodle and a golden retreaver. They are very smart, love kids and are very playful. They don't shed that much from what I know of them.

Check out this page that is all about them [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

I also like pugs (i own one that is crossed with a Schitzu) and they just love kids or anyone for that matter and constantly want to play. They are very small when they are pups and easy for kids to handle. They are not known to shed much at all. Mine has been fairly fast to learn commands like sit, no, off etc and he's only 8 weeks old.

Pugs aren't real barkers either. Both breeds love to socialize. The Golden Doodles pick up commands fast and you'll have an easy time of training them if the breeder has not already started as they pick stuff up awfully young and fast. Both breeds again are very gentle with kids.

The only other thing to consider is how often people will be home to play etc with them and space. With the pugs they don't get all that big but Golden Doodles are a medium size dog and would not work in a small space such as an apartment.

If you have a house with a yard that's paradise to that kind of dog. They're very affectionate as I mentioned above. for accurate info on pugs try www.pugs.com
