Old dog in pain

Question Posted Saturday March 24 2007, 4:09 pm

My sister just let me know that our dog, who is really old (around 17) has been in pain and has been having trouble walking/balancing. The other night, she noticed he was crying and that he was lying on his stomach, on all legs (spread across the floor). She took him to the vet today, and he said that since our dog is old, he has pinched nerves and is in pain.. so he gave him an injection (not sure what) and took a blood test. He also has a prescription for steroids. We're going to see how he feels after a while.. if he is still in pain, we may have to put him to sleep.
Anyway, my question is: has anyone ever heard of this, and how common is it? Also, what are the chances that my dog (at his old age) will actually feel better with the meds? I have a feeling we may have to put him to sleep soon :(

Update: he's doing a lot better now due to the steroids :) so hopefully he'll be alright. If anyone has had a similar experience, insight is appreciated ..

my first dog was like that.... we put her on meds but it was to late because she couldnt hear, see, or smell anything if you put a bowl of food in front of her she couldnt even tell it was there :( so we had to put her to sleep but i guess it was good so she didnt have to keep feeling all the pain.

i hope ur dog is ok!!!!!!!

I disagree with the previous poster. Your vet has your pet's best interests at heart. Let him find out what's wrong and try to give your dog a little more good time through the steroids and pain medicine. If it's not working after a reasonable amount of time, then you can make the decision to put him to sleep. You don't have to do this now. See what happens.

The sad truth is that the best thing for the dog right now is to be put to sleep. He's getting old, plain and simple. With age for dogs comes pain, medication or no. It's best to put him out of his misery.
I know it'll be hard for you and your family, believe me, I have a dog who I consider my own son and I have no idea what I'd do if I was in a situation like this. But would you rather have a living dog that's in pain just so you can have him.. or stop his misery?

Good luck!
