i was watching the real world denver, the one where brooke goes to the nail salon and she comes home and she says i was in the ghetto. what does it mean when she says ghetto, like what does the word mean?

The ghetto is a neighborhood or a couple neighborhoods put together where the houses can be easily broken into and the windows and doors aren't in the best shape, they're small and not just black people live there, it's mainly where people can afford big houses.
