I'm going to be 16 next year, and i have a lot of money saved up for a car. (almost 6 grand) and i've always wanted a V8 Firebird (the one the guy held for me is $5500). but my parents dont want me to get it because they said if i get good grades (3.5 gpa or better) they would pay insurance, and if i get this car, and keep my gpa up, they would have to pay it.
reality check, who would, it would be $1,200 every 6 months at the LEAST. and if i was a girl itd be $800, (according to online thing i used).
i know it shouldnt be that big of a deal, but ive got my car all picked out and insurance is holding me back.
how can i convince my parents, and or get the money to pay for it, without spending all my time working, and not dumping pay check to pay check into insurance.
im a rater.

Although you want a Firebird, maybe widen your options and look for a Trans Am or a Camaro. They are all very similiar body styles. Now I am assuming you are wanting a Firebird from the 90's correct? Those usually run around the price you mentioned. I wouldn't recommend getting a Trans Am from the 70's though. They are cheaper because they are older, and they are usually not dependable. You can't find a Trans Am from the 70's just anywhere. You would probably have to get it from a private owner which isn't a guarantee it is in the best of condition. You may end up spending alot more money in the long run if the car turns out to be a lemon. Not only would the car have a lot more mileage, but it could also have some pretty bad rust problems, the interior could be in bad shape, exhaust might need replaced, and god knows what else could go wrong with the motor later... So your best bet is to go with a newer vehicle for now, like something from the 90's. Insurance will still be cheaper than a newer car and the car will be more reliable. Now the problem with insurance being higher is that you are a guy and also the fact you are really young. Those two factors including the fact you are going after a sports car, especially a V8 makes your insurance incredibly high. (Guys tend to drive faster and get more speeding tickets than girls, so that is why it is more. Stereotypical, I know...) Now I don't understand why your insurance would be that high every 6 months. I have a 2004 Cavalier LS Coupe with a completely customized interior and exterior, and a few engine mods. Almost everything in completely aftermarket in my car and mine is around $1500-$1800 every 6 months plus I have full coverage. So an older vehicle like the one you are looking at should not be that high. If I were you I would look around for an insurance company that offers low rates for younger, less experienced drivers. Weigh in your options and don't just settle on that one Firebird. You could get another Firebird or Trans Am for less if you wait and look. And since you pay for it cash, if you are buying from a car dealer not a private owner, you don't have to get full coverage. So if I were you I would get minimum coverage to lower the insurance costs. And also you might want to go for a V6 for the mean time. It will lower costs alot. If you want a fast car, you can always modify the motor later when you have more money, or even do a motor swap. But if you are stuck on a V8, prepare for the costs to be more. I hope I helped.

Forget about insurance...
Focus on your school work.
I know it sounds TOTALLY GAY and NERDY, but think about it, if you only worry about your grades, you`ll get `em up in no time and your parents will think about the $$$$ && pay. I just thought that yyou already had another person tell you how to split it, maybe I would show you a different point of view.
Hope I helped.

orphans answered Sunday March 18 2007, 3:26 am: a trans-am is an expensive car to insure. but here's what you can do to get the car and keep low insurance. buy one that's older. and when i say older i mean like a 1978 trans-am. the 2002 WS6 TA, or firebird TA is gonna cost an arm and a leg to insure. and i bet it'll be a lot more than what the online thing said to insure when all is said and done. but the thing about an older vehicle. even when paying it off over time is that insurance on it would be dirt cheap. my friend owns a 78 trans-am and he pays $40 a month on it for insurance. he pays $310 a month on the loan he got to buy the car. but if you were to put the 6 grand you have down on an older collector trans-am you'd get a lot cheaper one to insure in the long run and a lot cooler looking one to boot.
but here's my question: where can you find a V8 firebird or trans-am for 6000 bucks? i see em sell for at least 14000 or more all the time. are you looking at one from the 80's or something? either way i suggest going for a 70's one, they cost about the same as the 02's do now but you get a much cheaper car to insure, and the same amount of fun.
my only gripe with all this though is a trans-am is not a good first car for a kid. too much power at too young an age. that's why the insurance is so high because they know that most kids wreck their first cars, and they know that somethin with that kinda power is a much higher risk. i'm gonna suggest you go for something a bit more restrained but still fun. miata perhaps? older corolla (back when they were rear wheel drive)? MR2 maybe? you'd be suprised how much cheaper insurance is when you lose the V8 engine for a smaller one. just a suggestion though, good luck. [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
Cathleen answered Sunday March 18 2007, 2:44 am: Yall could split the payment down the middle and or YOu pay it one month they pay it the next. Or put a little bit of money up from each paycheck and then say your half every month or when its you're turn to pay you will have enough money and still have some to go out and have a good time. Hope I helped somewhat.
