It's like a flamingo in a flock of pigeons. You stand out in a crowd, you don't fit in. If somebody ever said that to you, they'd be telling you you're very different and don't belong there. Very insulting, but I'm sure they don't mean it to a high extreme

It means like in a group, someone is an outcast, doesn't belong. etc. (b/c a fish can't live out of water.)
For example,
you have blonde hair and you're with a group who have black hair. In that case, you would be considered "a fish of water". (Not something that stupid, really, but yah. I hope you get the point!)

Hope I helped!

Out of their normal environment. So a person from Florida would be a "fish out of water" in Alaska.

Well i think that it means that something isn't in the place it should be.. like fish live in water, so when it isn't in the water, well it would probably die, because it needs water! lol so im pretty sure it means that something isnt in its place!!
hope this helped~

To me, this phrase means that something really doesn't belong with it's surroundings... to dictionary.com.... it means a person out of his or her proper or accustomed environment... so basically the same thing :) hoped I helped.
