I am 17 years old (living in Michigan). I work as a cashier. Can I get fired for calling in sick to work one time? The place I work is non-union if that makes a difference. This would be my first time calling in. Normally I wouldn't risk losing my job, but my back is killing me. Are there laws against that kind of thing or what?

fire you. They would have to train someone else and would be running short of help until then.
No call no show can be fired on the spot, I think they like to have 3 incidents before they can fire you in most places. But most small non-union places can hire and fire as they please. I don't think they will though...just be sure you call in sick as far in advance as possible so they can call someone in. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
