Many and varied. They want to see someone who is involved in their community--it's a good indication of someone who will be an active member in their college community. They like community service a lot, too, and they also like to see dedication to activities, as well as leadership positions.

they look to see if you chose extracurriculars and stayed with them through high school. they also look to see if you had any leadership positions: were you president of student council? you need to be well-rounded and have a variety of extracurriculars.

They're really looking to see how committed you've been in high school and even before.
It kind of depends on the type of school you're look at, but most schools like to see a well-rounded extracurricular resumé. Some school involvement (sports, student government etc), community service (both through your place of worship - if you have one - and outside of that), plus anything else you might be in (gymnastics, dance, ice skating, summer recreation teams).
Depending on the school, you may be able to apply for scholarships for community service and other extracurricular activities. :)

hey, well colleges like to see commitment. they love seeing "i did cheerleading for ten years and track for five years". basically they want to know that you participated in your school by doing sports and other activites and that you stuck with them.
