my computer sounds like a vacuum

if im on the computer for example, google, aim, advicenators, youtube, itunes, etc etc. every once in awhile my tower makes this sound. im not sure if its the fan but thats where its coming from, that general area. it sounds like a freaking vacuum!! its really loud and annoying. after about 2 minutes it totally stops, but then might start up again a few hours later. it just did it twice in 10 minutes. what is this?? thanks!!

It's the sound made by the fan in the tower, which is there to keep all the other hardware cool.

If you think it's louder than it normally is, check it to make sure it's not dusty or otherwise clogged.

Yeah, it's the fan.


It works harder to keep your computer from overheating. It's possible you have a lot of programs running at once, but it can (and will) still happen even if you have one program running.


Jsut be grateful it's working. Your computer can literally catch fire if the fan isn't there.


If the noise becomes constant, parts of your computer may need to be replaced. Otherwise, you probably have nothing to worry about. Just make sure the back of the computer has plenty of ventilation.

As Laguanababe said, yes, it is the fan inside your computer. If you put your hand around to the back of it you should feel hot air blowing out. This is air being blown through your computer to cool it down, because otherwise it would overheat and die.

Yes, it's the fan inside your tower. All computers do this, and have to do it in order for the computer to run correctly.
