Debate Club!

Question Posted Monday February 5 2007, 9:38 am

Ok so, I'm starting a debate club at school, I think I have like sixteen people interested, but that number will probably increase by five to ten people. We've never had a debate club at school before, and though I know how a debate is set up, kind of, I have no idea how the teams are made, like will there be 8 people on each side or what? :/

I want people who have been in a debate club to tell me how they did things at school, just so I can get a general idea.

Any tips and advice are nice, but tell me how I set up the teams. Do I have different teams debating different things in groups of four con and four pro, or what?

Oh, and what are any topics you've debated that turned out to be really interesting and informative?

I think you could have all one big group (one side pro, one side con), or like you said, small teams of 4 pro, 4 con.

Some good topics would be:
-media influence
-abortion
-death penalty
-myspace [good or bad]

Anything like that should work fine.
If you need anymore, let me know.

Hey. Here's a tip. Go to this website:

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

The National Forensics League is a formal organization of forensics teams which include debate, acting, speech, poetry reading, dramatic interpretations, etc. It also includes extemporaneous speaking, parliment, and the traditional two-on-two debating style tournaments.

The NFL [not the football league ;)] generally has subjects which are researched by the teams to make arguments both pro and con. There is a formal system as to which team goes first and which arguments are given (introductory or rebuttal, etc).

Some of the best topics of my day OH so long ago, in the 90's, if I remember were bilingual education, immigration control, welfare reform, abortion rights, de-regulation of industries (such as the airline industry or utilities), and education in general. One might, for example, argue the merits of performance-based bonuses given to teachers.

Good luck,

Sabine

hey, i'm in debate club but just started, so i can't help you a whole lot but i'll tell you what i know.
first of all are you planning on competing with other schools or is it just a fun thing to do as a group?
the debate's i have been in are parliamentary extemporaneous.
basically there are groups of two, one group is the government and one is the opposition. In the government group they are trying to pass whatever resolution you are debating, the opposition is against the resolution.
parliamentary refers to the parlament, so it's like government kind of, and extemporaneous means immediately, so the teams don't know what the resolution is before they get there. usually it's famous quotes or just an argument about something in the world and then the government gets to define the quote more specifically. sometimes they are serious, sometimes funny.
such as "rap music is offensive and degrading to women and should be banned." then the government goes specific, like "rap music includes lyrics and material that includes descriptions and visuals of female's involved in degrading acts where they have taken advantage of by rappers and characters involved in the rap music, and therefore a $500 penalty should be issued for every album released that shows women in a degrading and lower standard than men." something like that, once i did one that was "there is no moral victory." and you can define that however you want.

those kind of debates are fun but you need a judge, either a real one in a competition or someone in ur group who knows the rules.

there are also debates where the people know the topic weeks in advance and prepare to go one on one with another person with a prepared argument and rebuttal.

also, this isn't debate, but it's part of public speaking if you're interested in that, they are very connected.
*after dinner speeches ar really fun. A person performs a speech as if they were someone else talking to a group of people, they are usually very funny. for instance a girl at my school did one about packaging. She was the CEO of a box company and was basically making fun of how hard it is to open everythin (ex. all of the twist ties on toys, CD cases, etc. just talking about how hard it is to open packages) and in her speech she wrote it as if she was very proud of her company for all of their achievements in making things difficult to open.

there are also competitions where people perform dramatic monologues, those are pretty intense.

anyways good luck, talk to me if you have more questions, i am soo happy to answer them
