My Microsoft Word was forever crashing and I finally got sick of it, so I sought an alternative. I totally, completely recommend Open Office.
It comes with everything Microsoft Office does (except slightly different, of course, but the programs do the same things), but it's totally free and totally safe. You can even save your files in .doc format if they're to be sent to someone else (.doc is Microsoft Word's native file format). It's never crashed on me, nor have any of the other programs it came with.
