Question Posted Saturday January 27 2007, 12:41 pm
I am almost 14 and I've never had my period before. I have a few questions that I really need answered.
1.) I heard that you gain weight during your period/puberty. I'm definitely in puberty right now, but I'm afraid that when I get my period, I'll gain alot of weight. Is this true?
2.) Does it feel uncomfortable to exercise when you have your period? I would really like to keep biking (about 60 min) daily. But I'm afraid it will feel uncomfortable if I have my period when exercising.
3.) Do tampons hurt to put in the first few times? I am probably going to have to wear them when exercising. But can you put them in wrong or can they get stuck? Also, which brand of tampons do you like the best?

You will not gain alot of weight just from your period. It is true that girls do experience weight gain and loss during puberty because of hormones. But every girl is different and if you are concerned about gaining weight once you get your period, you should get consider watching what you eat and getting regular exercise.
2.I personally do not think it feels uncomfortable to exercise while Im on my period. You might feel a discomfort from cramps, but actually exercising helps decrease the pain from cramps. After you work out, you may just feel better.
3.It does hurt the first few times. I think part of the reason it hurts is because of being nervous. Just remember to relax your muscles and things will go alot smoother. Tampons cannot get stuck. I perfer tampax pearl. [ smokedank123's advice column | Ask smokedank123 A Question ]
Shortcake22 answered Saturday January 27 2007, 6:33 pm: 1.) You may gain weight. It shouldn't be a lot though. You'll get curvier, your hips will widen, you will get bigger breasts, maybe more of a butt, other than that though, you shouldn't have any large weight gain.
2.) This all depends on your flow and whether you have cramps or not. If your flow is heavy, you may feel uncomfortable and want to refrain from exercising. And also, if you have cramps, while a little movement is said to make you feel better, you may not feel like moving much.
3.) It might hurt a little the first time you are putting it in because you won't know for sure how to do it. But it shouldn't be intense pain. Just experiment and you'll get it right. They shouldn't hurt while in, if it does hurt, then chances are its not all the way in, and you'll need to put it in further. You shouldn't have a problem with it getting stuck. Just make sure you leave the string out. I prefer Tampax Pearl tampons the best =)
chrissabelle37 answered Saturday January 27 2007, 4:26 pm: Hey. I'm 14 too and I just recently got my period about 6 months ago. Nope I haven't really gained any weight, I stayed the same. You'll still be able to exercise but it might be a little uncomfortable the first 3 days maybe 4 or 2 depending on your body. That's when the cramps happen but they won't last all day. You can find a time in the day when they die down a bit and the exercising will keep your mind off it. After the first two, three, or four days tops though the cramps go away and you'll be able to exercise and it won't be very uncomfortable. As for tampons I have no idea I've never used them. I really hope this helped and good luck! =) [ chrissabelle37's advice column | Ask chrissabelle37 A Question ]

2. A few days before and about the first two - three days of your period you will be very crampy, this is called PMS. But it shouldn't be so severe that you can't ride your bike. Excersing actually helps relieve cramps. Some girls don't even cramp at all, it's different for every person.
3. Okay, yes the first time you use a tampon it might be a little uncomfortable and scary, but it shouldn't hurt. Your box of tampons will come with an application guide that tells you (and provides diagrams) on how to use tampons.
I buy Tampax Pearls, they have a smooth applicator so putting them in is as comfortable as possible, plus they come in cute and colorful wrappers :)
I hope all of this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Good luck!
