We are going to have an Oregon-Oxford debate for one class and that's our topic. I'm for the birth control side. Meaning, having [premarital] sex is okay for as long as you use birth control methods(be it artificial or natural). I'm so sure that the opposition(Abstinence) will read us some biblical stuff and will probably tell us that no contraceptive is 100% effective.
Pleeeeease give me good and strong answers to these stuff because I (and my group) don't wanna look like a fool in front of everyone.
Condoms are 85% effective. Birth control pills are 99% effective. Put them together and you have a minimal chance of getting pregnant.
In an ideal world, teenagers wouldn't have sex. But the reality is that they do (45% average, but in 1993 it was 72%). It'd be nice if they didn't, but there's no real way to stop them, so the least you can do is prevent pregnancy.
Some people never get married. Does that mean they should remain virgins until they die?
People having sex with birth control isn't hurting anyone! Abstinence is not realistic. At all. Instead of trying to fix something impossible, why not stop something bad from happening? It's the only thing you can do.
Why the bible says abstinence before marriage: in those days, the average age of marriage was about 16. That's outdated- now people get married later in life.
I love JesusFreak2006's argument- make sure to use that.
Oh, and if you don't understand imperialistic's argument, what they mean is that with birth control, your chance of getting pregnant is 0.01% (not 0.01% effective!!!). [ xokristabelle's advice column | Ask xokristabelle A Question ]

So when they say that no contraceptive is 100% you can point out that while this is true, that using contraceptives greatly reduce the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. Or when they explain their postion using the bible and how sex should be between husband and wife, you can say that these viewpoints are outdated because most people wait until their late twenties or early thirties before they marry, where as in the past most people were married way before then.
confused,jealous,and..sca answered Thursday January 25 2007, 11:48 am: okay so your birth control right and their abstinence okay so what you should do is say that birth control makes you think your pregnant so you will not produce more eggs so therefore you cannot get pregnant i hope this helps sorry it's all the advice i can give you... JesusFreak2006 answered Thursday January 25 2007, 11:13 am: I'm all for abstinence but a good arguement is Mary from the bible had a baby and she was abstinent obviously abstinence isnt 100% effective then...that will be a stunner to them... Daimeera answered Thursday January 25 2007, 11:02 am: Find statistical/psychological evidence that indicates that sex is an integral part of a good relationship. If you don't have sex before you get married, you have no idea if you'll be compatible in bed. There *should* be plenty of reliable sources out there that say as much, even if they're not specifically referring to premarital sex.
Add to that that it's an individual choice, and you should be good to do (well, along with everything below me, and much other research). [ Daimeera's advice column | Ask Daimeera A Question ]
CHANDLER answered Thursday January 25 2007, 7:17 am: Hi,
God I could not take part in that debate, as I would quite simply end up strangling to death every last one of the deluded, brainwashed, bible bashing, moronic, stupid a**wholes!! (I make no apology what-so-ever to any person who takes offence at my description, as it is entirely true). It would be impossible to bring these people into the real world with the rest of us as they have (in all seriousness) been systematically brainwashed from birth and they will do the same with their children and so the vicious circle goes on. Personally I think people like that serve no useful purpose other than to waste valuable oxygen!!!! The very best of luck with the debate and pleas make sure you let me know how it goes.
Imperialistic answered Thursday January 25 2007, 7:14 am: Well, if used perfectly, birch control pills are 0.1% effective against preventing pregnancy, If used typically, 2.15 to 8%.> [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
> Condoms if used perfectly are 2% effective and typically 15% effective > [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
> If you know how to do math, you can figure out what percentage both are together if used perfectly and that number would be something sad like 0.02%.
You could also shut down their biblical argument and bring out a list of statistics that dictate how many people are actually Christian and believe in the biblical stuff. [ Imperialistic's advice column | Ask Imperialistic A Question ]
