Question Posted Sunday January 21 2007, 1:30 am

I got the top of my ear pierced a week ago and it had quit hurting, but tonight it started hurting and it's swollen where the back of the earring is. Is it swollen because it could be infected or because of the earring irritating it? What should I do if it's like this I cleaned it with peroxide.

Normally, if your ear is irritated by the earring it should only last 24-48 hours. If it keeps bothering you any more than that, TAKE THE EARRING OUT. How do I know this? Because it happened to me. Most likely it's infected. And don't just think that cleaning it is going to make it go away. Just take it out, and let your ear breathe. If you decide to get it done again, wait about two weeks and then go back and get it done. Also, when you pick out earrings, try earrings with an extended post on the back.

My best friend once told me,
if you get your cartlidge peirced it
will get infected no matter what.
I've found this true with all
of my friends, all of them have
had infections after their cartliedge
piercings. So don't fret about it.

Keep cleaning in two times a day
with rubbing alcohol, or if you got
it done at Claire's use that antisceptic
stuff. Other then that, twist it
every once and a while just to
keep the hole open and clean.

Try not to touch the swelling too
much to risk a greater infection.
If the infection doesn't die down
in a week, let your doctor know.

Good Luck <3

Ok, I have the top of my ear pierced and, I have really good skin unsensitive so, I can wear crap earring and it doesn't get infected.

What is the earring made of? You could be allergic to it and the quality could be making your skin react. Make surre it is a high carrot gold.

Give it around 3 or 4 more days, clean it with rubbing alcohal 3 or 4 times a day and always wash your hands before you touch the piercing.

If it still is bad then take it out and try again when it's healed.

Good Luck!

have you been cleaning well at least twice everyday? if not, you really should. youre bodys not used to the earring so it could easily get infected if you dont. if you have, maybe youre allergic to the metal? i have both of mine pierced, and theyve never been swollen or anything, but i have noticed little bumps around the hole on the back of both ears on several occasions. they always went away after awhile though. clean it really well maybe like 3 times a day for a few days, and if nothing improves, take it out and either call or go see your piercer.

It could be swollen for either reason. If it still hurts by tomorrow night, I would definately take it out. I know you just got it pierced & there's a chance of it closing up.. But I personally couldn't deal with the constant pain. I'd rather have no earing & feel good. Best of luck!
