Many girls break their hymen by the time they start their period by swimming, running, etc. Even if the hymen isn't broken when a girl gets her period, the hymen almost never covers the whole vagina, allowing for menstrual flow. If the hymen does block the flow, a surgery will usually be performed to allow for normal menstruation.
