I'm 21 and I do have crooked teeth. I've had crooked teeth for quite sometime now. It's something that runs more so on my dad's side of the family so I may have the gene. Anyways, I think I may need braces and am kinda nervous about wearing them. Could someone who has had braces tell me what I would probabily need to expect and how it was with you having braces?
kittygurl90 answered Friday January 19 2007, 4:13 pm: Well.. Ive had braces 3 times. I can tell you that they arent much fun.. but they arent horrible either. They will hurt at first for a few days, so just take advil. Depending on how bad your teeth are will determine how long you have them on. You will probably have to go in for check ups about every 4-6 weeks. My braces went good for me.. i had an under bite so i got braces in 4th grade..got them off and then the under bite came back and i got them back on in 5th grade.. then i got them off again in 6th grade. and i got them back on after 8th grade so i could just straighten them. i just recently got them off in july. Getting them off will hurt a little bit after for a few days.. so take advil/tylenol. You tongue will be so used to rubbing on the braces that when you get them off your teeth will feel awesome. you might get like canker sores in your mouth from the braces rubbing. they will give you wax for that. i think thats basically it.. if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Braces aren't really that bad as most people say. The only painful part about getting braces is when they put in the blue rubber bands between your teeth, it is extremly painful, and usually lasts for about a week. Getting your braces on isn't very painful, but it is very annoying to hold your mouth open and not being able to swallow for half an hour. I've had my braces for almost a year and they're not much of a problem. When you get braces though your restricted from eating many foods including ice, peanut butter, laffy taffy, caramel, gummies of any kind, most candies, and on the list they gave me it said bugs. If you take care of your braces, then the most you'll have them on is about 3-5 years. My sister never took care of hers and had them on for 5 years which is considered VERY long. Sometimes crap gets caught in them, but thats the only real annoying part, besides not being able to eat candy. Good luck!
hope i helped

However, i was very wrong because like 3 days after i got them, i couldn't even feel them and my teeth just felt like normal. However, be really careful when brushing and don't eat hard foods like apples and toffee cos they can break the braces. [ sunkissedsportybabe's advice column | Ask sunkissedsportybabe A Question ]
sizzlinmandolin answered Friday January 19 2007, 11:56 am: Hey! The only problem that I had with braces was that right after I got them it was hard to play my flute for band. If you play an instrument it will take some time to adjust.
The braces won't hurt too much. Only for a few days after you get them and each time they are tightened. If you get Anbesol ([Link](Mouse over link to see full location)) it will help relieve the pain. If any loose wires are poking you you can get dental wax to cover them up. You should also get what's called a Water Pick ([Link](Mouse over link to see full location)) to help clean your teeth where your toothbrush wouldn't be able to reach anymore.
Your Orthodontist would go over all the information you would need to know and give you a list of foods that you should avoid. I think that you should set up an appointment with an Orthodontist so that you can go over any specific questions you may have about your individual needs.
You may not even need braces. Many people's teeth aren't crooked enough to need them. You may be able to just wear retainers for awhile.
I wouldn't worry about troubles with the ladies. Girls your age are more mature about this type of thing and may even find it more attractive that you're bettering yourself. Personally, I think braces are kinda cute on older guys.
ILoveQueen answered Friday January 19 2007, 11:54 am: I have braces. And my teeth were SUPER crooked before that. I had like a bazillion gaps...lol. When they first put them on, it felt weird...and my jaws, gums and teeth were sore...and my head sometimes hurt...but that was just for like 3 days. It goes away. When they tighten the braces, sometimes it's very hard to eat. But it's bearable. I myself am 15/f. And I've been wearing mine for exactly 3 years now. And to tell you the truth, it's nothing to be worried about. Braces are the new style, and everyone wants them ;D. If you follow your orthodontist's directions, and ALWAYS wear what you need to wear, and eat what you need to eat, then you will be fine. :) I hope I somehow helped. Good luck. :) [ ILoveQueen's advice column | Ask ILoveQueen A Question ]
theymos answered Friday January 19 2007, 11:53 am: For the first few weeks your mouth will hurt because the braces rub against your cheeks. After that you don't even notice them. When they tighten them your teeth are sore for a couple days, but it's not super painful. When they put them on, they put little metal things on each tooth. They stick them on with glue/cement, and then dry the cement with an ultraviolet light. Your teeth will get a little warm from the light, but that won't hurt. When they put the wire in it feels like they're pulling your teeth, and it's uncomfortable, but doesn't really hurt. While wearing them you can't chew gum or anything really hard or sticky. Food will get stuck in your braces and you'll have to brush more throughly than normal. You'll get used to it after a while, though. [ theymos's advice column | Ask theymos A Question ]
