I was wondering why you're not aloud to just take your medicine and that you always need to eat food before you take your medicine? Like if it's really serious, you don't have time to eat food, you gotta eat your medicine as soon as possible and hope it's working!

Usually they mean it when they say to eat with your medicine, just because you can get bad side effects if you don't eat. Like, for example, my sleeping pill, I have to eat with it (it's really gay, right?),and one time I risked not eating and when I woke up in the morning I had a masive headache all day. All people have different reactions to every medicine. It may not affect someone else, but may affect you. Do you see what I mean? So if you're on the go and can't fully eat a meal, just have something on hand to eat, like a nutri-grain bar or something. But, just for your health's sake, just eat with it. can make some people get heartburn, or acidic stomach and nausea if not taken with food. Take it with milk if you have to, that will help. But ALWAYS take your medicine.

Daimeera answered Thursday January 18 2007, 6:11 pm: Generally, there is one of two reasons you're supposed to take it with food--to protect your liver, and to protect your stomach.
For medicine like Tylenol, having a little food in your stomach helps protect your liver from the direct effects of the medication. If you OD on Tylenol, for instance, it can eventually put you in liver failure--but that's not something to worry about provided you follow the directions.
Some medications also upset your stomach; food helps with that. On an empty stomach, you're more likely to notice a bit of nausea.
If it's once in awhile, it probably doesn't matter that much--for most medications. There are a few that can be very sensitive to change (I believe Effexor is one, but I could be wrong) and need to be taken very strictly, the same time and same way every day, but your doctor would know more about that than I would.

Medicenes like Advil or Ibuprophen and others can be taken without a meal, like if your in school before lunch, they may just not work as well.
