Am I overworking myself?

Question Posted Wednesday January 17 2007, 11:58 pm

I've been having this problem...and it's the fact that I strive to be a perfectionist...I don't WANT to be...But I feel like I have to be. I get straight A's, kiss up to teachers, ALWAYS do my work and turn things in. I never skip any assignments...but I've been wondering lately...is it bad to overwork yourself? I mean...I've already done so much. And I haven't been getting enough sleep either :(...I don't know what I'm doing wrong...I can't quit getting good grades...but I'm sick of my head being so messed up. I feel as if school is taking a part of me away...I have ABSOLUTELY NO time on my hands to do ANYTHING...I haven't been to the mall in AGES! ;_; :(...What should I do?

Wow, you sound just like me. Grades are really important, but not as important as your life. I got sick doing all my work and everything you are saying. The only thing I can say is layout of the work a bit make sure if you are up past 11 doing your work to just stop and if you don't already do your work as soon as you get home that way you have time for fun stuff. I really hope this works out for you.

YES! You are. There will be plenty of people desperate to tell you how important school and getting good grades is but what I'm telling you is that you only live once and life is for having fun! So give your self a break and get out with your friends. I'm a firm believer that there is nothing more important in life than your friends. Go and enjoy your self!!

There's nothing bad about getting good grades and looking out for your future. But at times you need sometimes to yourself and relax. I think you should make a schedule for your studies and make sometimes in that schedule for relaxation time. Time to spend with your friends, time to spend on yourself, time to do things you love, etc. I mean there's nothing bad to be a perfectionist, getting straight A's. Parents would love that. It shows you're mature and responsible. But overworking is not that good. You're still a teenager. You need to have a social life. You need to hang out with friends and catch up with non essential things like boys, gossips, etc. Eventhough you might not care but at times it good to get updated with the latest stuff in school.
I myself, went through your same situation. I was in a point where my grades are so important to me. I only focus on my school work that I didn't have any fun. No mall, hang outs, parties. I didn't get enough sleep. But I found a solution. You work hard, but you also play hard!. So I spent my weekend.. a few hours. .. catching up with friends. On weekdays .. I study. focus on school. my day off, I hang out with friends but afterward, I go home and spend 2 hours at least on school work. Plus you don't have to study every subject everyday. put an hour on one subject a day. =].
Well make a schedule for yourself. =]. hope I helped. good luck. let me know how things work out.
here's my sn: shiet itz vy .. incase you need anything. I'm on 24/7. =].

Ha, I feel you're pain.
I'm getting used to 4hours of sleep every night.
I MUST get straight A's
EVERYTHING must be organized at ALL times
I HAVE to kiss up to the teachers and administrators
I MUST be the top 2nd violinist in class
I HAVE to have everything PERFECTLY done or it will drive me crazy
I HAVE to meet the demands of every club I'm in.
Never skipped/turned in a homework late.
I stayed up all night finishing a history project after getting 6hrs of sleep previous to that and so that week I got 6hrs of sleep over the course of 5 school days..hmmm

Haha, I feel your pain and yes, you and I overwork ourselves but we DONT have to. There's a way to manage time that will reduce stress.

Learn to cut out unecessary stuff like AIM/MSN/YIM, myspace, emails, talking on the phone. Yes, you're not gonna have a social life if you overwork youself.

Anywhos, get home, get homework done, and sleep. Don't get on AIM, myspace and all that jazz. I mean, get on when you have time...but heh if you're loaded with hw, forget about it. IF you do extracrricular activities--I mean a lot of them like I do, find ways to fit in bits of hw here and there. Over the weekends, don't goof off to the last minute. Finish EVERYTHING that you can..even if the due date is a month away. Just do it because it will make your life a WHOLE lot easier.

Caffeine is your best friend if you're deprived of your sleep by the way. XD
