You get 21 active pills they are for when you don't have your period and 7 in active pills they are known as the sugar pills which you take when you are due and have your period. Each month i guess i have missed one or two put have never had any pregnancy scares. They are excellent! They $20.00 which gives you a pack with four sheets in it, this will last you four months... so basically it works out at $5.00 a month. After yiou have had a week of full pills you should be right to have un-protected sex but remember the pill doesn't protect you from STD's And STI's! When you go to the doctor to get prescribed the pill she will put you on the one she thinks is best for you. [ Elle19's advice column | Ask Elle19 A Question ]

The pill prescribed depends on the doctor's personal preferences and what s/he recommends for you based upon your history, such as whether you smoke, whether you have a family history of heart disease, stroke, or breast cancer, and what other medications you might be on. They also consider your reasons for using the pill. They might prescribe different ones for birth control only than they would for acne or menstrual regulation.
I got pills free a couple of times through planned parenthood, and doctors usually will give you at least a month's worth free to start out and see if the pill works well with your system. I have seen them range from about $20 per month to about $60 per month.
Here's a pretty informative link for information on different types of pills:
