From someone who is born and raised in NYC-

Because we are New York City

This city is the symbol of American financial power and the "American Dream"

Times Square is one of the most gorgeous places in the world- especially at night

Because we are New York City and there is no better place in the world to have anything major occur- Come one day and see for yourself; you will not be disappointed and you will see what I am talking about..its the place to be!

Yeah it seems pretty rediculous when you think about it, but its a tradition and as Americans we enjoy wating billions of dollars in a few minutes for the fun of it; but hey why worry about that now, its new years eve, chill out and have fun, Happy New Year!

It does't drop; it is lowered. They use the same ball each year.

As Thew said, it is a publicity stint.

I'm sure it is on Wikipedia, if you look.
