Question Posted Thursday December 28 2006, 2:50 am
The first time I asked this question almost all of the information I got was useless.
I've pierced my lip unprofessionally. The girl who pierced my lip has done three mouth/facial piercings to herself, and at least two others for different people - not counting me.
Earlier I had an earring in the hole to keep it from closing. I'm aware that an earring is not the correct gauge. I did NOT pierce my lip with the earring. In fact, I used a much larger needle that now (post asking this question the FIRST time) have pushed that needle through my lip three times.
I've researched this piercing for months now, and got parental permission before I did it.
This is NOT the first home piercing I've gotten.
Does anyone have any CLEANING tips or any suggestions as to what TYPE of ring I should buy to put in it?
(Do refrain from telling me to take it out or about the "cheese grater effect" because I'm already aware of what problems this may cause.)
Additional info, added Thursday December 28 2006, 3:16 am: The earring is now out because the points on the star (the charm on the end of it) were digging into my face. There is currently a piece of stiff string (which I've used for other home peircings) in it's place being cleaned every hour on the hour.
I'm aware that I should have a stainless steel bar/ring in it, but at the current time I cannot find/buy one.
I've thought about taking it out because of my lack of ring.
But I'm afraid if I take it out now it'll be nothing but scar tissue and I won't be able to pierce it there again.. Want to answer more questions in the Miscellaneous category? this ring allows easy cleaning and almost no irratation
as for cleaning, you can buy a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide and clean it with that and warm water two times a day, or you can use salt water, or easiest and still very effective you can use a mild antibacterial soap.to do this wet the lip and ring with warm water, rub some soap inbetween your fingers, and then into and around the ring. work the ring through your lip (hmm, how to describe it...kinda like turning a steering wheel, yet its in your lip) and yes it will sting, but thats good. do this two times a day for maybe 1 to 2 monthes depending upon how healed it is already.
hope this helps - any more questions and im here.

But in answer to your question;
You're right, steel would be good, but if not, try titanium as it's suitable for almost all piercings.
Take a look at these websites to see what other types are available; [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
In regards to you taking it out and not being able to re-pierce due to scar tissue, you can re-pierce it. It may hurt more next time round. But there's nothing wrong with piercing again.
Cleaning tips, I'd carry on what you are doing, only less frequent. Perhaps move to every 2 hours because too much cleaning can be irritating it.
Also, I'd suggest warm sea salt soaks twice daily. They work wonders with reducing any pain and swelling etc. [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]

As for what you can put in it in the meantime, maybe try to put in an ear hoop. Not the kind with the clasp, but a never ending hoop. That is the kind that makes a complete circle through the earlobe. It is a hollow tube, and the closure of it is a wire that comes out of one hollow end, and you insert the wire into the other end. That would cause less irritation on your face as well as your gums.
If you are unsure of what I'm talking about, there is a picture on this link. They come smooth without the braided decoration, and you can get them at Wal Mart for cheap. They are generally gold or sterling silver.
As for the string, when I had my tongue pierced, they suggested replacing the barbell with heavy fishing line if you had to remove the bar for dentist, etc.
The fishing line is because it is plastic, slick, and won't absorb anything that could possibly jeapordize the health of your piercing. And it can be moved with ease. Heavy fishing line is real thick. You want that to keep your hole from shrinking too much.
As for cleaning instructions, the link below is a page that gives all the good details of how to properly clean your lip piercing. There is a lot of information on this page you might find useful.
