It depends on how good the fake is.
I'm pretty much an expert at this I did this whole summer internship here it goes...
common thing you see venders do or people who sell the fakes for real on ebay- there is no multicolor backpacks in papillion or ellipse. There was no Cherry Blossoms in Alma or Cabas tote.
The main things you look for on a Louis Vuitton to check if it's real is.... it is supposed to be lined, it should have feet, does it have a d-ring, does it have a data code? The lining is usually in a brown cotton. there has never been a brown suede lining, ever. althought some bags seem to have the suede lining it isn't. So basically if it doesn't have a brown cotton canvas lining it's fake.
The momogram sign or the 'LVs and Circle pendants, ect' can also give away it's authenticity. The LV monogram is usually (except with some vintage pieces) are symetrical from side to side in all the monogram styles.
Another thing to catch is the stitching. The stitches all are about the same length. And very regular. In some bags stitching is very easy to tell a fake: for example in the Speedy bag, there is always 5 stitches across the top of the leather tap which the handles attatch to.
The vintage LV pieces are tricky. Not all have the current give aways. Like in some of their French Company Speedy bags, there is not always 5 stitches across the top and the LV does not have to be upside down.
The upside down LV does not mean the handbag is fake. In some Speedy styles there is one side which has upside down LV sign because it is simply one piece of leather wrapped around the entire bag.
The patches of leather on the outside or inside of the older vintage Louis' can sometimes be fake or real. Usually they are real however in some occasions the vintage bags to have them and are usually circular with MLR on them. Some current bags also have patches in square cloth.
The fonts on the logo's or MADE in signs are very specific. Usually fakes have cheap fonts but realys have verrry round O's.
Louis Vuitton does not do discounts or sales of anykind at their stores. They do not have irregulars, no outlet stores, or wholesale. Louis Vuitton tags are never attached to the bag. Some desginers have their tags attatched but Louis Vuittons are usually tucked into a pocket. The Tag or card itself IS NEVER YELLOW! All the time the fake tags are made yellow. If it has a yellow one it's fake.
LV has never used brown/bronzed envelopes with a sticker on them with the purchase. If you have one- fake!
You should always the know the data code of your bag and where it is. The CURRENT data code is two letters followed by 4 numbers. Usually found in the pocket.
Notice what it is packed in, if it is in a box make sure the inner color of the box is the same as the outer. If it comes in a bag: the older ones- make sure it is a Cotton flanner in a brown chestnut tone. The LV label on the bag is tiny and dark brown. The newer ones come in thick bad, about the same tone however Louis Vuitton is written across the front and centered.
When you buy your bag, buy it from a LV boutique or eLuxury.com It comes with tags, the real ones. However, the fakers are now doing a better job at duplicating the tags than the bags. [ ImFakingHotPink's advice column | Ask ImFakingHotPink A Question ]
