Cartilage Piercings

Question Posted Thursday December 21 2006, 8:04 pm

Hey, does getting your cartilage pierced hurt? If i were to get mine done, I would go to Piercing Pagoda, where they use a gun. Also, I might have to take it out after about 4 or 5 weeks to play softball, but I would put it back in right away. Would it close up after being outs for about 3 hours? Thanks a lot!

no, it doesn't hurt at all.
getting my ear lobes pireced hurt worse then my cartilege.
i don't recommend getting it done with a gun, because it is more prone to getting deformed.
but if that's your only option, i know a few people who are fine. :]

it wont close up within 3 hours.
you have to leave it in for a month without taking it out, which is basically 4-5 weeks, so i think you'll be fine.

you could always put a bandaid over it when you play softball instead of taking it out.
that's what i did when i used to cheer. :]

hope this helped!

I've had my cartilidge pierced five times, and I can easily say that it doesn't hurt at all. I got two of my ear piercings at Piercing Pagoda, and I got a really cheap earring & it got infected, so I had to take it out. If you do get it done there make sure that you get like a mid-expensive one. They have like $5 ones, so yeah, bad idea. Get like a $15 one. =]

Hmmm. It takes your cartilidge like 4 months to fully heal, and even then you're not allowed to keep it out, you're only allowed to change it. I remember when I had my cartilidge pierced for like a month and I had to take it out for gym class, and it was only 40 minutes & I had a really hard time putting it in. It would bleed and get infected repeatedly, so it took even longer for it to heal.

I'd recommend going to Piercing Pagoda telling them you're situation, and get a professionals opinion. If I were you I'd wait until you're able to keep it in for a longer amount of time. Or maybe put a bandage over it when you play softball, ask your coach.

I have had my cartilage pierced, and it did not hurt. At least not as much as I was anticipating. But I did have a problem a few weeks after the piercing. I lost the back to the original earring and replaced it with a standard back, little did I know that I would have an allergic reaction to it. I then had to take out the piercing and let it close up. I hope that this is helpful to you.

You should absolutely not get cartilage pierced with a gun. Rather than explaining it in my own words, I'll let a jewelry site explain it (but there are many, many more that confirm what it says):

"So what's wrong with doing ear cartilage piercing with a gun? The skin on the cartilage is held in place by a connective layer to the cartilage, when the stud goes through the cartilage it tears the connective layer away from the cartilage and fluid fills the void between the skin and cartilage. This fluid crystallizes and forms what is called Cauliflower Ear* ( *usually seen in boxers who fight without ear protection ) this bump looks awful and is not the desired effect for ear cartilage piercing. The cartilage piercing takes and inordinate period of time to heal due to the lack of room for the skin to heal through the hole of the cartilage because the piercing isn't big enough for the tissue to enter the hole in the cartilage. Besides that the cartilage isn't suppose to be pierced that way in the first place."

Really, really not smart.

And admittedly I can't answer your other two questions, but I thought it essential to reply to the gun part.

i personally dont have my cartilage pierced but manymanymany friends of mine have had it done. they say it doesnt hurt much more than getting a standard ear piercing. good chose with the gun.just make sure everything is sterile. and the hole may close up a tiny tiny bit but it would be easy to put the ring back in. make sure you keep everything clean. :)
