Dreamland
I'm reading Dreamland by Sarah Dessen right now, and I've become kinda confused. They talk alot about 'lighting the bowl' or 'preparing the bowl' when referring to smoking pot. I'm not a pothead, nor do my friends talk to me about it, so I'm confused as to what you do to smoke pot. If you could please explain the 'bowl method' so I could better understand the book, I would greatly appreciate it. :]

Part of this depends on the pipe you are using, and this goes for more than just pot. Mind you I've not touched a single drug in nearly 8 years, but I cannot imagine that things have changed much in that short of a period.
As for preperation:
Some pipes need to have a screen put into the bottom of the bowl. Someone earlier posted that you can use foil, but you can also buy little mesh screens someplaces. I liked those a lot personally, they were quite handy. The reason you need that is otherwise you will suck in a piece thats red-hot, right down your throat if you aren't careful.
Cleaning is a big thing, particularly if you smoke a lot. Resin builds up, and just like a normal tobacco pipe you need to clean it out. You can scrape it out until it gets too bad, then I always got out the alcohol and went to town. A lot of people I knew actually saved the resin they scraped out...myself I never went to all that trouble.
You cant jam a bud into a pipe all willy-nilly, it won't burn as well. I always tore them into smaller pieces that burned better. This is the same reason tobacco isnt just jammed into cigarettes in large pieces. Also its highly recommended to take all the seeds out beforehand. Then you just pack it down a little.
Of course different people do it differently.

to light the bowl is reffering to marijuana or "POT" the bowl would be what they use to smoke the pot. It has many different names like pipe, piece. there are many more. its like a small cylinder about 1 inch diameter and it has a small hole in the end. on the other end is the bowl. the bowl is what they put the weed/pot into. that is what it means to load the bowl...and to likgt the bowl would mean to take a lighter to the weed and smoke the weed. the weed light and the smoke travels through the cylinder and realeases out of the hole into the mouth. then they breath it in and hold it as long as possible. thus called smoking pot. hope i helped if you have any more questions just ask.

When say a "bowl" they are referring to a pipe. In the case of the story you are reading, they are talking about a marijuana pipe.
It is the same for someone who smokes out of a tobacco pipe... smoking a bowl of tobacco.
Preparing the bowl would be loading it with marijuana, lighting the bowl would be lighting it and smoking it.
Hope this clears up your story confusion, but don't smoke pot!

You put a piece of tin foil in the hole on the bowl (look it up on google images if you dont know what a bowl looks like. haha) and then you get a piece of weed and you make it small and pinch it together and put it in the bowl..then you light it on fire ha its not too long or confusing..hope that helps?
