When to go

Question Posted Sunday December 17 2006, 6:36 pm

What age should you start going to a gynocologist? I just turned 13 and i have had my period for about 1 3/4 years. And how would i aproach the subject with my dad since i live with him and not my mother.

A woman should have her first GYN exam as soon as she first thinks of becoming sexually active or when she reaches the age of 18 - whichever happens first.
Go earlier if you have problems like excessive cramping, heavy bleeding, yeast infections, rash, skin sores, etc.

How to approach your dad all depends on your relationship with him. Is he open and modern? Does he usually take an active role in your healthcare in general? Do you share secrets with him? How did he react when you first started menstruating? It also depends on why you want to go to the GYN. If you want to go for birth control pills, make sure you can safely talk with your father before you bring it up or speak with a trusted female relative who can be present when you speak with your Dad. Remember, you are a minor and while laws may vary by state, most doctors will still feel a need to share *some* information about your exam with your father. If you have questions about sexuality or need clarification about your body and its functions, you can consult your school nurse or possibly Planned Parenthood.

Be like can I see a woman doctor... if you get my drift "wink wink".hahayeahh. Or you could call your mom && ask her to ask your dad for you. That sometimes helps as well!

Most doctors suggest going either after the first time you have sex or when you turn 18.

It won't hurt to go, but it's not necessary at this point.

well, from what i have heard, as long as you are not sexually active, and you are having no problems down there, you can wait till your 18. if you become sexually active you should start going, otherwise i would wait, why go when you really dont need to?

hope that helps,

alyssa
