making a formula (physics)

Question Posted Sunday December 10 2006, 7:11 am

ok im trying to understand something.. but it's really hard for me, so please help me.. i have a very hard time with physics! k right now im trying to understand a lab we did a few weeks back.. it was like this, we rolled a ball down an inclined plane (like a slide) and measured where it would land, then we put the same ball lower down on the inclined plane..and it landed closer to the slide.. (obviously) now the point of this lab was for our teacher to explain to us the connection between the height (where on the slide we'd put the ball) and the length (how far away from the slide it would land) but i dont understand! at all!

also i want to make a formula for it, incase he tells us (on a test) to "calculate where the ball would land if we put it on a certain spot on the inclined plane".. i know already its supposed to be "L = (something) sq. route of H" now i just have to figure out that "something".. so here's what im thinking, it has to do with time, right? time should be a factor.. and i've looked it up on google and they keep saying "the distance is actually proportional to the square of the time: Double it and the ball would go four times as far" ok i get it, but how do i make a formula from it??

can you help me? thank you so much if you can, i really dont want to fail!
