Question Posted Saturday December 9 2006, 11:09 am
I love my cat a lot. I spoil her. I spend so much money on her, including on food, treats, toys, and little cat furniture (like beds and such). But almost every time I feed my cat food, she eats a little of it, then starts kicking the bowl with her front paw, and scratching the carpet, trying to cover up the bowl (even trying to put stuff in it like a sock that was next to it, or her toys). I have no idea why she is doing this! I sometimes tried to stop her, but in a way I also think she has a good reason for doing it.. so I am not sure if I should anyway. What is my cat doing?? And what should I do?? Thanks in advance!
Additional info, added Saturday December 9 2006, 12:48 pm: Just as a note, I cannot change the food for my cat b/c the food I give her is the only food she eats.. I have TRIED every brand out there, and she likes only one of them, which I give her. So please don't tell me to change brands. I already tried that method. Thanks. I have two, i love them, but i know they're always trying to come up with ways to confuse the heck outta me!!! this could be one of those things. your cat loves you but wants to play a trick on you, so she develops this crazy routine....
heres my lame idea....sometimes cats rebel against their food and especially their water if you use strong smelling dish detergents when you clean their bowls. just thought i'd throw that out there. [ hezett's advice column | Ask hezett A Question ]
fish34 answered Sunday December 17 2006, 12:49 am: I'm not sure if it's the same with cats, but my ferret pushes his food bowl around to knock some on the ground. He will only eat out of shallow bowls that are really low to the ground but anything that he has to lean his neck over he will try to knock over. But anyways, it might be a combination of this and that lots of animals will hide their food instinctively (my dog hides biscuits in the bed for instance XD). As long as she is eating and looks healthy weight wise, I wouldn't worry about it. ^^ [ fish34's advice column | Ask fish34 A Question ]
TEENAGExHEARTS answered Saturday December 9 2006, 12:45 pm: i have three cats and i know EXACTLY what your talking about. it is completely normal and it isn't because your cat doesn't like the food. out in the wild when a cat is finished eating they would always bury whatever food was left. so really all your cat is doing is "burying" her food. my one cat does this. he just "buries" the floor around his bowl before he walks away.
Daimeera answered Saturday December 9 2006, 12:20 pm: Generally, cats try to cover up what they think smells bad or is unappealing. My guy used to do this too, and he still does occasionally.
She might get used to the taste and smell, or you might want to try a different type of food. The fact that she is eating some is a good sign and it may mean that she will adapt to it. On the other hand, she might become more finicky--it really depends on her personality.
You might want to consult a vet about what types of foods would give her proper nutrition, and then try a few different kinds of those.
ductape_n_roses answered Saturday December 9 2006, 12:03 pm: there are 2 reasons that I can think of.
My dog scratched the bowl with his paw because he didn't want to eat out of it. When me or my mom would put the foodon the ground or in our hands and feed it to him that way, he'd eat it.
Another reason would be that your cat doesn't like that brand of food or the flavor of the food that you get her. My mom had to try several foods in order to find one that suited my dog. So try to buy small different flavors and different brands. [ ductape_n_roses's advice column | Ask ductape_n_roses A Question ]
XkittyOkatX answered Saturday December 9 2006, 12:03 pm: I'd say to leave her alone. Most animals, especially ones in a new house hold, love to play with everything around them. She may be covering up the bowl, becuase she dosen't want it taken away , like an animal would hide their food in the wild. You should be able to leave her alone on this, as long as the goes and eats the food later. If she's not eating properly, you should try a new kind of food, or try taking her to a vet to get a reccomendation on how to change her eating habits.
Scratching at the carpet is completly normal. You'll just have to try to get her to be trained to not to it. Most cats I know of do this, so dont worry abou that. =D.
