Don't worry though! Christianity had its beginnings as a cult, so it's nothing bad.

The best way to define anything is to research for yourself and to decide for yourself. We all reach our own conclusions. I too, have had very dear Mormon friends and for that matter friends of a multitude of religious backgrounds and beliefs. It should not affect your friendship! However, if someone is pressuring you to believe as they do, it is not a good friend. Friends accept one another for who they are and do not judge. To me a cult is any organization in which groupthink overcomes individuality...most organizations are susceptible to this groupthink phenomenon. Do yourself a favor while you are young, and only think for yourself. Question everything!!! No two people agree on everything, and if they do, there is something very wrong with them. We are humans, and our individuality is what makes us special. Don't ever trade that in for so called acceptance into any group...that would be cultish. Remain stubborn and critical of everything anyone tries to tell you as "the truth"...which is just their idea of what their truth at that moment is for them. Keep an open mind and heart, but never stop learning or questioning. Life is not supposed to be easy to figure out, and the universe is an amazing mystery. If it were simple, then it would not be so incredible. Your life is a journey, not a destination, so never settle for anyone else's conclusions. If you take a look here: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
You’ll find a few definitions of what a cult is, most of which Mormonism fits. It might be worth it too point out though, that based on those checklists, Alcohol Anonymous is a cult too.
Most people just use the word cult to mean a religion they disagree with or believe to be hieratical. The Mormons just see this label as another way mainstream Christianity discriminates against them. However, it’s worth it to remember that Mormonism originally began as a ‘personality cult’ with people drawn towards a modern prophet. All definitions of cult agree that is a large symptom.
To make matters worse for the Mormons, there is an off-shoot of Mormonism called
The Reorganized Church of Latter-Day Saints or the Community of Christ, which is even more cult-like then mainstream Mormonism ever was!
So is Mormonism a cult? Depends on who you ask and how it practiced by members. I would say probably not any more then most conservative Christian churches. [ Razhie's advice column | Ask Razhie A Question ]
