I have no idea what this is on her side. I have a female, seven year old dog that is a rat terrier. For almost four months, she has had a bump on her right side. It's about half the size of a nickel. What could this be?

it could be a tumor (a benign of a cancerous one) or an abcess. (a bunch of pus beneath the skin). please take her to the vet!!! she might not be disturbed by this at first, but its better to get it checked out to save her life in the long run. ]
It depends what you mean by a "bump". If its more of a ball kind of shape, it could be a small tumor, it's not uncommon for dogs (or horses as I have commonly seen) to get very small tumors that never grow very large and are harmless, but I strongly advise you to see a vet to make sure it isn't harmful. =] ]
It could be a bug bite, it could be cancer. Take your dog to the vet. ]
It could be anything, serious or not. It could be a bug bite or something worse such as a cancer. You should really take your dog to the vet, because they will be able to indentify it.
You could also try giving it a few days (about 3-5) and see if the bump gets smaller. If not it may be something serious.
Good luck :) ]
