for girls..

Question Posted Saturday December 2 2006, 4:05 pm

This is my 16th day on my period. Last month it lasted 14 days, and before that it was seven. I've had my period for a year and a half and I'm thirteen years old. I know that normal periods should last between 3-7 days, & mine has lasted 16 days. What could be wrong with me and what could I do? If I tell my mom she will probably make me go to the gynocologist, what will the gynocologist do?!

Thank you, and please help me .. i'm really scared.

Hi there, this is not normal and can be serious. You are probably already anemic (loss of blood) and really need to get checked out. Have your mom take you to a female gyno (as that is most comfortable for women) and she will give you an exam. I will give specific details for the exam: You will get undressed, obviously, put on a paper robe, lay down on a bed and stick your feet in the staps on the sides of the bed. I won't lie to you, it is really awkward because your legs are wide open. Next, the doctor will push on your stomache to feel for abnormalities (such as cysts) and feel around inside of you with her other hand. They may also give you a pap test, which they insert a medal clamp inside of you and swab the inside with a q-tip and test the contents. (It sounds scarier than it actually is). The best way to deal with this is to understand that the doctors are trained in doing this, they now how you feel and try to make you comfortable. You should never let the awkwardness stop you from going to the gyno, because many problems can be detected and treated early. The examination is normally quick and pain free. If your exam is normal, she may order further tests such as cat scans or ultra sounds to check out what is causing the problem. If you are anemic, and I guarantee that you are if you have been bleeding for so long, your doctor may want to put you on iron pills. Good luck.

My best friend recently had a problem similar
to this, she just went to her regular doctor.
The doctor took some blood out of her arm and
ran some tests, turns out she had a more serious
problem relating to stress which caused her
to have very adnormal flow. But since she went
she was given the pill and her period is normal and she's healthy again. This is why I recommened you to go, just to check things out.

I recommened telling your mom and asking for a visit to the gyno/doctor. Who wants a period for 16 whole days? Its better the be safe then sorry.

Good Luck <3
