I'm taking accutane, and about a week after I started taking it, I started to have rectal bleeding when I go to the bathroom. It isn't very bloody at all. When I wipe, there's just a little pink stuff that is obviously blood (again, there's not much at all. and it isn't like I leak blood).
Anyways, my dermatologist didn't mention rectal bleeding when putting me on accutane, but on online forums, people have noticed the same thing. Should I be concerned? Is rectal bleeding serious, or is it normal every once in a while due to medication?
... "Stomach area (abdomen) problems: Certain symptoms may mean that your internal organs are being damaged. These organs include the liver, pancreas, bowel (intestines), and esophagus (connection between mouth and stomach). Stop taking isotretinoin and call your doctor if you get severe stomach, chest or bowel pain, trouble swallowing or painful swallowing, new or worsening heartburn, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, yellowing of your skin or eyes, or dark urine."

You wouldn't believe the list of side effects on this.
My advice is to call your doctor ASAP, tell him/her what is happening and tell them that you read on the FDA website that this is a known side effect and an indicator of possible internal organ damage.
This isn't something you should wait on. When I say ASAP, I mean call your doctor as soon as possible.
It may be completely unrelated, but that isn't a chance I would take with my body.

I worked in a doctors office for several years. You would not believe the very long insert that comes with sample medications doctors offices get. I am talking a couple of arms lengths! So, there is no way they tell you all the side effects. They just tell you the most common.
I doubt it will become anything permanent. You really do need to speak to your doctor about it though. You might just call his office tomorrow and ask to speak to his nurse. Won't cost you a thing and will make you feel better. She can let you know if it is something that needs looked into further. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
