Question Posted Thursday November 23 2006, 11:07 pm
How do you go about getting tested for depression? What do they do?
Because I'm tired of being unhappy.. I have been feeling like this for years and I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
Do pills really help making you "happy" or is it just a waste of time?
I just want to be happy again..
I can't do anything I like anymore. I oversleep and I'm still tired.. All I want to do is lay down and I keep canceling plans with friends..
And my confidence is low.. I dont know anymore..

You can't take it anymore and i know you feel increadibly anxious about just getting beeter and feeling happy! I myself would just sleep or lay in my bed and do nothing..it seemed like the only thing close to an escape.I never went out with friends..i didn't care if i saw anyone ever again. When i did, I was very tired and only wanted to get back in bed. I didn't know or care for anything anymore. To answer your question about medicine, it really depends who you are and what kind of depression you have. Normally, docters or whoever diagnoses you with depression will just ask you whats wrong and if your sleeping habbits have changed..stuff like that. Depending on how you respond, they'll probably test your blood and see what comes up so they know what kind of depression you have. Yes, medicine tends to work but seeing as i don't know you and have never talked to you personally i don't know if it will in your case. Its better to try then not to. Beleive me, it made me feel tons better! I'll be here to help anytime if you want to talk! just ask!!!I wish no one had to go through the pain i went through so i hope you get better as soon as possible!! Hope i could help! At one of my first visits to him he asked if I ever cut myself and how I thought about life. I answered the questions thruthfully and he gave me a perscription. The medicine gives you a high, the intenceity of the high depends on the perscribtion you're given (I don't mean like a crazy high). I don't really know that much about the medicine, but I know that they are not a waste of time and they help. The thing that helps the most with depression is talking to your therapist and listening to his/her advice. [ 4210708's advice column | Ask 4210708 A Question ]

As far as medication, i personally believe that is a pyscological fix. But it also depends on your level and type of depression. If you are experiencing situational depression than i dont believe medication is going to fix anything. But if you are experiencing depression due to a chemical imbalance in your brain than you may need medicine. But you definitely need medical attention from a therapist in order to determine that. There are pills to lift your mood. Ive had some friends that were on them and I suppose they are worth it but personally I wouldnt want to go on them.
I just deal with my depression and force myself to go places and do things because i know if I wasnt feeling like that I would enjoy them.
The pills, however, basically make you unable to feel sad. They give you no negative emotions. Something bad could happen to you and you wouldnt be able to draw negative emotions out of the experiance, which I dont like because it feels fake.
Doctors dont suggest taking them forever though, they are just a temporary cure, and very addictive. After maybe a year when they see a signifigant change in you they will try and "ween" you off the medication. Which is what they are currently doing to my stepdad because he became addicted to his anxiety and depression medication.
After so long of being on the medication, you dont know how to deal with sad things unless you are on them. Thats why the suicide rate for taking them are so high, because if they miss a doss and some tragic event happens, it will be a stress overload and they go comit suicide.
I dont recommend going on them, & I personally never would.
Depression comes and passes most times.
If you really feel that its a growing problem, though, go to the doctor and get evaluated and ask for some other alternatives then depression meds because you dont want the side effects. [ VainTaraLynn's advice column | Ask VainTaraLynn A Question ]
