Vegan Diet?

Hey. I've recently decided to go vegan. I'm new to all of this and I dont know what to buy in terms of food. I know they do not associate themselves with animal products at all. This is going to be a challenge for me because I like cheese. But for the animals' sake, I'll do it. So can anyone tell me what ingredients in foods, and makeups, etc. etc. I should be looking for. Also, a site that has vegan recepies on it would be a big help as well! Thanks Alot!

I've been vegetarian for about a year, and i'm slowly converting to veganism. The things i've been having a hard time with is bread, pasta, muffins, etc. There's eggs in all of those things. Also, no honey. And no dairy, but i'm sure you already know that.

Also, if you have a WholeFoods grocery store near you, it'll be easy to find everything you need, they have a vegan section.

I know I'm not really answering your question, but here's some food for thought (Oh, a pun! :D)

Soy plants need somewhere to grow, right?

Did you know that deforestation in Brazil has increased by 40% thanks to demand for... soy?

More animals need to die to supply you with soy than would die if you were to simply eat them.

So if you REALLY want to help the animals, boycott soy products!

If i were you I would try to be vegitarian first for a month and then vegan, just so you can ease your body into it.

Vitamin B12 can be an issue for vegans, though it can take years in many cases for a problem to reveal itself (it wont happen overnight). Most people get the B12 they need from animal products; if your serious about being a vegan you should be aware of alternatives. You can get B12 from supplements and/or food items that have been forified with B12.

I'm a vegan.

I'm 17 years old. I'm 5'7'' and I weigh 150 pounds. I menstruate once a month and very rarely have cramps. I poop twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. My cholesterol is 128. I'm an A- student and I plan on going into costume design in college next year. I don't get acne and I'm rarely sick. I donate blood and the back of my state ID is signed. I'm also a vegan. That's how I'm still alive. I'm actually HEALTHY and a GOOD KID now that I'm a vegan. I eat right. I exercise. I can run around the block without getting winded. I'm one of the coolest people you'll ever meet and I'm not afraid to say it.

All the health problems I have are related to my weak stomach which was a direct result of consumption of heavy cheeses and dairy products as a child. Now that I'm vegan I can stomach ginger ale. Maybe one day I'll drink coke like everyone else. but whatev. it's not holding me back. I didn't become vegan and automatically die or have problems getting enough protein. I just kept right on being me. Everyone will try to talk to you out of it and say it's too hard and you won't like it, but it's really not. It's the easiest decision of my life. live cruelty-free? okay. can do. bring on the soymilk and agave nectar.

two books you absolutely need to read before you go vegan: vegan with a vengeance and vegan freak. vegan freak should answer a lot of questions and give you advice for dealing with omnivoric friends with dumb questions you probably once had. VWAV is the single greatest vegan cookbook for modern kids I've ever read. I've tried about 30 of the recipes and they're all fantastic. one was a flop, but I substituted and played around the entire time. it happens. some of the recipes are available through the post punk kitchen website (use google). vegan freak is also connected to a podcast/forum run by the authors (again, google).

finally, talk to me. ask me all the stupid questions you want. I've got a notifier up on my desktop to tell me when people do various things at places I frequent. I'm quick to respond if I'm near my computer. I really like vegans. I think of everyone as a vegan on the inside. we all want to do our part.

although i applaud your decision to go vegan i would advise you to talk to some people who are living this lifestyle. i know several people who just went vegetarian and because they didnt know how to eat the right foods to replace the things they were cutting out they got really ill. one of them was hospitalized. i am not putting down the idea but just be careful to have a complete balanced diet.
