My mom called me this morning to tell me that my dog was at the veterinary clinic all last night, and that he's dying of kidney failure or cancer. They've decided to put him to sleep today.
I feel really guilty because I haven't been home for a month, so I haven't seen my dog. I really want to be there to say goodbye to him, but I can't go back to my parents' house until this coming weekend.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get through this? I feel like I've lost my best friend.
There is a link you might be interested in checking out. I want to warn you that it's an extremely sad video, and it will probably make you cry. The point of the video is that even though the animal might not be visible.. that doesn't make them any more alive in your heart. :) [ Mackenzie's advice column | Ask Mackenzie A Question ]

You need to give yourself permission to grieve, something that can be difficult, as there are a lot of people that will say, "it's only a dog"! Please don't feel guilty about not being there, you would have been if you could, but you have a life to live, and things can happen unexpectedly.
Try to celebrate his life, make a large photoframe or an album of all your favourite pictures of him, talk about him to family, friends, partner. They are probably feeling sad too.
It sounds as though you have a lot of love to give, so give yourself time, and then maybe think of giving another animal a wonderful home. If that's not possible at the moment, do it when you can.
I hope that helps and I wish you all the best for the future. [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
