Question Posted Sunday November 5 2006, 1:11 am

I have a 5 month old purebread Shih Tzu.
When I'm gone longer than 5 hours, I put a pee pad down for her to go on..
She chews it up!!! or when I come home I catch her lying on it after she goes pee on it!!
I need some advise..
Thanks
jeanette

I have 2 Shih Tzu`s on my own. And now they are 5 years old. I had that problem when I first gone mine too! I know you dont want to be mean to them but you just have to scold them and tell them no and stop. And eventually they will stop. But I am not for sure. Or you could go to Petco and sign them up for training and just tell them your dogs problem and probably they will tell you what to do to them and stuff. :]. hoped i helped.

chances are she is bored.. My puppy did the same thing although she never had to go to the bathroom on it lucky she was basically potty trained from day 1. What i would do is first give her toys and what no so she is entertained and 2 if she only goes on that and not the floor take it away. She will not be happy when she has to hold it all that time and can't go then she will eventually learn her lesson. (she should be able to hold it for 7 hours its the monthes they are plus 2 usually) but when my dog was 8 weeks old she had no problem holding it all day because she hated going inside so she should have no problem.

Also maybe you could train her to go on an old towel or something thats harder to chew up

I am not sure if you are using a crate to house break your pup or not. It sounds like she might have too much room to care if the area she sleeps in stays clean.
After training a lot of dogs. I have found that crate training is the best method. You can do away with the "pee-pads" that way, and save yourself a little expense and mess. Personally I think the pads reinforce that it is okay to go in the house.
