Helix Piercing

Question Posted Thursday November 2 2006, 11:40 am

Hey I was thinking of getting a helix or wat people will call, cartilage(upper ear) piercing.

1)Will it hurt badly and is the level of pain equal to piercing your ear lobe?

I've heard bout a story where someone who pierced his helix went blind. After he had he's cartilage pierced he saw something white protruding out and he pulled it out and he unknowingly pulled out his nerve.

2)Is this possible or is it pure bullshit?

I have over 20 piercings, one of which is a helix.

1) It hurts, but not like really bad. I'd say just a little worse than your ear lobe.

2) I think thats its bullshit. But it could be true, I have heard of this happening. Cause everytime I get a piercing I loose sight for a few minutes, but I don't like blackout.

1) I got it done for my 15th birthday and i can honestly say it wasn't bad at all. The acual piercing part i could barely feel. The only part that hurt was when you sleep on it at night.

2)i would say that story is prob untrue. Either way you should never pierce anything yourself

The main reason I'm answering this question is because of the nerve thing. That is pure, unfiltered bullshit.

Yes, a piercing can get infected.
Yes, there have been horror stories about piercings turning into awful situations.

But there are also stories about people bleaching their hair and winding up completely bald.

Sure, these stories may have a flicker of truth in very RARE cases, but that's just like the stories about "that kid who went in for a routine appendectomy and now will never walk again." The chances of that happening? Slim to nothing.

If you go to an experienced, qualified, licensed piercer at a reputable shop, the chances of you having any issues are incredibly, incredibly small.

Now in many cartilage situations, the skin gets infected and the piercings have to be taken out, but a lot of that arises from lack of care.

Get your helix (it will look AWESOME) and just make sure to follow the care instructions exactly as they are listed.

You'll be fine and look phenomenal!

It depends on your pain tolerance. It is expected to hurt more than the average lobe piercing, but I honestly don't think the pain is bad at all. It may throb for a while afterwards and you might get a slight discomfort (if any. everyone's different) but it's bearable. :)
Just make sure not to knock it if you do get it and to sleep carefully. Because that could be a bit painful..
As for the story about someone going blind, I doubt very much it is true. I've heard all sorts of rumours, eg. People going deaf. Possible you might think, but the risks are VERY minimal or people wouldn't be getting these piercings on a daily basis. Don't let that story put you off. and if you're worried about any risks which may be involved, talk to your piercer and they will put you at ease. Also, do your research beforehand. Good luck!
