i've had the same group of best friends for five years & i've recently lost them all because i tried to do the right thing. anyway, i decided that i don't need negative people in my life. sooo...i'm going to try & make new friends & i was wondering: what are some good conversation starters? [:
killerkittens11 answered Monday October 30 2006, 4:42 pm: Well, new people always want someone to talk to, so in that case pretty much anything works. For starting convos with everyday people, the random "Hey," always works for me, in fact i made 5 of my current friends that way. Be the social butterfly you can be. Good Luck!
blwinteler answered Monday October 30 2006, 3:54 pm: I really like Xineph's answer. You can't get more options than that, and the ones that seem strangest are the most likely to tell you about the people you are talking to. There is a question that should be there that unfortunately isn't: Have you ever been in a Turkish prison.
I knew a guy who would ask this to catch people off guard as a sales technique. One time he asked a guy this and the answer was "Well, funny you should ask . . . " Turns out the guy had been a POW or something in a Turkish prison.
So, some of the odder questions can give some very interesting answers.
I also agree with the person who said to start out with the basics, like where you are from and what you enjoy doing. Then listen for clues to what to talk about next. When you do this, it shows that you actually care what they are saying and will help them to be more friendly.
Most importantly, be yourself. If you want to make new friends you will be happy to have, they need to know who you really are and be happy with that. Also, whatever happened with your old friends, don't bring it up with the new ones, especially early on. You will come out sounding like the bad guy no matter what the situation was, simply because the new people don't know you yet. Once you become good friends, if you are both bitching about people in your lives, then it is ok to gripe about your old friends. [ blwinteler's advice column | Ask blwinteler A Question ]
saltpeppershaker answered Monday October 30 2006, 12:57 am: Aww, there are a million books that have been written about your very predicament.
It's hard, and I mean HARD to make new friends sometimes. The key? Listening. You don't have to have a zillion questions memorized or a speech prepared when making new friends, the key is listening.
Let me explain.
Say you and I are talking for the first time, and we know nothing about each other. We start with the boring questions, you know, where do you live, how old are you, where do you go to school, blah blah blah blah blah.
Now say you ask me what seems like a normal, boring, regular old question, like this.
"So, do you like living in St. Louis?"
and I say
"Oh, I love St. Louis, especially now that everyone has baseball fever."
If you listened to what I said, your next question should be about baseball. I left the door open for you to ask a question about baseball such as
"Did you go to any of the World Series games?"
"Are you a big Cardinals fan?"
or blah blah blah
Example 2
You say
"What did you do this weekend?"
I say
"Oh, I got super duper drunk and ate an entire carton of fried rice"
and then this would open you up to ask questions like
"So is fried rice your favorite food to eat after a night of drinking?"
or
"Do you prefer beer or liquor? What's your most favorite drink?"
The key to getting people to like you
is paying attention to what they say,
and it's super duper easy to do. Just listen. It's the little things in what people say that gives away information about themselves. [ saltpeppershaker's advice column | Ask saltpeppershaker A Question ]
