Poverty Slide Show and Speech

Question Posted Wednesday October 4 2006, 12:32 pm

Since UN day is coming up soon, or International Day, at least at my school, I've been asked to make a slide show about poverty. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what song I could play while the slide show is rolling? I am obviously not looking for suggestions like 'PROMISCUOUZ GIRL!', ok?

Also, if anyone has any ideas on interesting things/figures/facts I could include. I'm going to go for defining poverty, where it exists most, what changes/plans are being made to prevent it and why people should care. If you guys have any additional suggestions, it would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks.

Last year or so sarah mclaughlin came out "world on fire", a really good song that highlights the issues involved with world poverty. The video is incredible... she actually donated the funds that would be used to make the video to support international relief causes. Some great songs to use would be "Let it Be" by The Beatles, "Imagine" by John Lenon, "Where is the Love" by the Black Eyed Peas (not sure how much you want to use this), and "Dear Mr. President" by Pink.

I've included some web sites, the first few are giving facts, the last have pictures. If you are at all squeamish, some of them may upset you.
As for a song, one that lays things bare but has an uplifting tune is 'It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine), by R.E.M. It may have an upbeat sound to it but it has impact. People are not going to forget your presentation in a hurry.

The first song that comes to mind is "Imagine", by John Lennon. However, it almost comes to mind too easily, you know? Think about, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel; "A Change Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke; "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield; and maybe "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles (I wouldn't suggest the bridge part for this one. It's too upbeat, no?)

Wikipedia is usually excellent in... everything. This is no exception. Woot.
